Latest SECLI-FIRM Case Study 2 Video Goes Live

We created this animation with support from our project partners, ENEL and Alperia Group with research partners ENEA and Eurac Research, to illustrate the benefits of designing adequate decision support products to identify winter conditions in the Alps and Apennines that impact on the power system, the main aim of  Case Study 2.

The SECLI-FIRM project aims to demonstrate how improved climate forecasts can add practical and economic value in both the energy and water sectors. The new Case Study 2 video showcases, in just over a minute, how the SECLI-FIRM project is mitigating unusual weather. It features a dry winter scenario in Northern Italy, the impact on energy generation and demand and explains how the SECLI-FIRM project can help.

The story presents the mild and dry winter experienced in Northern Italy in 2015/16, which resulted in lower levels of snowfall than the energy industry had planned for, reducing their hydropower production in the spring/summer to almost half of what they had expected. The SECLI-FIRM project can help address the risk of impactful droughts like these by analysing data to predict how much snow melt is available for summer hydropower production. This together with seasonal forecasting methods can help operators make more informed decisions and plan better.

The SECLI-FIRM project is developing its final deliverables and are holding a Stakeholder Workshop in May 2021 to share their findings with industry and climate service providers and users and to stimulate further discussion on how climate services can enhance business decisions. All are welcome.
